In the early hours of Monday, Iranian missiles struck Israel, targeting the port cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa, resulting in significant damage to homes. This escalation comes against the backdrop of the G7 conference, raising fears that tensions between these long-standing adversaries could ignite broader regional conflicts.
According to National Emergency Services, at least five fatalities have resulted from this latest offensive, bringing the total number of deaths in Israel to at least 18 since Friday.
Over 100 people sustained injuries during a single night of attacks, part of a series of strikes from Tehran in retaliation for Israel’s preemptive actions against its nuclear and missile initiatives.
Emergency operations are underway in Haifa, where approximately 30 individuals were reported injured. First responders rushed to assist in the areas impacted by the strikes.
Footage revealed missiles converging on Tel Aviv, and explosions were audible as far away as Jerusalem.
Several residential constructions in densely populated areas of Tel Aviv were heavily damaged, with explosions being reported from nearby hotels and homes, alarmingly close to the U.S. Embassy branch. The U.S. ambassador noted minor damage to the embassy but confirmed that no personnel were hurt.
Guydo Tetelbaun, a Tel Aviv chef, recounted the moment the alert sounded just after 4 a.m. He described fleeing to a nearby shelter, where chaos ensued as the door was blown in seconds later. Observing the aftermath, he noted, “Several people were bloody and everything was cut off. The walls fell into the cave; there was no more glass.” He expressed his dread of uncertainty, contemplating whether this could mark the beginning of a protracted conflict.
The strikes even impacted a bustling area near Shuk Hacarmel, a well-frequented market in Tel Aviv. Individuals—both locals and tourists—were present, engaging in their usual activities, completely unaware of the looming dangers. Nearby schools and residential areas also faced attacks.
“New Approaches”
Iran’s security officials mentioned that these latest attacks introduced a novel strategy to counter Israeli defense systems. They asserted that despite extensive support from the U.S. and Western nations, Israeli defenses faced significant threats due to these new tactics.
The Israeli military was unavailable for immediate comment, though officials have previously cautioned that their Iron Dome defense system isn’t foolproof and warned of difficult times ahead.
Iran’s health ministry indicated that their death toll has exceeded 224, with civilians constituting around 90% of the casualties.
Reports indicated further strikes on Monday morning, targeting facilities linked with Iran’s military forces.
Leaders Gather
The G7 leaders convened in Canada’s Rocky Mountains on Sunday, with the Israel-Iran conflict at the forefront of their agenda. German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, supporting Israel’s right to defend itself, and fostering diplomatic avenues.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope for negotiations, stating, “I think it’s time for a deal.” He acknowledged the inevitability of conflict in certain instances.
Iran’s President Masuud Pezeshkian assured Parliament that the nation does not intend to develop nuclear weapons but will continue to seek its rights regarding nuclear energy and research.
Brent crude oil prices witnessed an increase early in the trading session, reflecting investor concerns, while Asian markets remained relatively stable.
Trump’s Strategy Towards Khamenei
In Washington, U.S. officials revealed that Trump recently dismissed a proposal to eliminate Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. When addressing this report, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated, “We’re going to do what we have to do.” Israel launched a surprise attack on Friday, claiming significant damage to key military and nuclear facilities, hinting at an intensification in their operations.
Iran, in response, pledged to unleash fierce retaliation.
Warnings from Trump
While lauding the Israeli offensive, Trump denied any U.S. involvement and cautioned against targeting American interests in Iran. Reports indicated that U.S. forces aided in intercepting an Iranian missile aimed at Israel.
Trump reiterated that Iran could end the conflict by agreeing to stringent restrictions on its nuclear program, emphasizing that although Iran claims peaceful intentions, external observers harbor concerns about potential weaponization.
Planned nuclear discussions between Iran and the U.S. were abandoned after Tehran refused to negotiate amid ongoing Israeli aggression.
