Iranian military seizes oil tanker Talara It occurred while the vessel was navigating the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. This tanker, flagged in the Marshall Islands, could potentially ignite a serious international conflict, as that area is protected by the United States.
The tanker, Talara was en route to Singapore from Hamriyah in the UAE, traversing a crucial shipping lane along the Iranian coastline. Iran has previously threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz during times of heightened tension or aggression.
Reports indicated that while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, the tanker was “approached by three small vessels,” as noted by the coast guard service Ambry. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), which functions under the Tehran regime and is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., was involved in the interception.
The Iranian military allegedly intercepted Talara as it attempted to re-enter the Gulf of Oman but was redirected into Iranian waters instead.
The tanker’s managing organization, Columbia Shipmanagement, reported losing contact with the vessel at “approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Khor Fakkan, United Arab Emirates,” around “8:22 a.m. local time on Friday.”
The UK Maritime Trade Operations Center (UKMTO) confirmed the incident, suggesting that “state activity” could have influenced the tanker’s change in course.
According to U.S. military sources, as cited by Reuters, the company was “aware of the incident and was actively monitoring the situation.” A U.S. defense official, as reported by Bloomberg News, stated that the seizure of Talara was a “violation of international law.”
The Associated Press noted that a U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton drone “hovered over the area where the Talara was for hours, monitoring the situation during the seizure.”
Iran has a history of seizing vessels; in fact, this isn’t the first time. Recently, in April 2024, the IRGC used a helicopter to capture a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship, Aries in the same region. The crew was released a month later, but Iran still held onto the ship.
In October, Iranian authorities announced an intent to seek a $170 million “penalty” related to the ownership of a different vessel, Ariel, which they alleged was owned by an individual linked to Israel. The ship is actually owned by a British firm, Zodiac Maritime, whose stakeholder is Israeli shipping owner Eyal Ofer.
As of Friday afternoon, there was no official statement from Tehran regarding the seizure of Talara.
