Missile Attack in Haifa Leaves Four Dead

On Sunday night, an Iranian missile struck a residential area in Haifa, Israel, resulting in the tragic deaths of four family members. Officials noted that the devastation could have been far worse if the missile had detonated differently.

The Israel Defense Forces managed to partially intercept the missile as it headed towards a refinery. However, the missile’s warhead penetrated a building, leading to significant destruction.

The impact caused part of the structure to collapse, prompting an 18-hour search operation for potential survivors. During this search, emergency responders successfully retrieved an 82-year-old man suffering serious injuries and a 10-month-old baby with minor injuries.

Erez Geller, director of Magen David Adom Ambulance Service, described the scene, emphasizing the challenges first responders faced. They had to remove debris manually, often using just their hands.

“Some areas of the building remained standing, but others had given way completely. It looked like there had been an earthquake,” Geller remarked.

The four victims have been identified as Dima Gershowitz (42), his wife Lucille Jane (35), her father Vladimir Gershowitz (73), and her mother Lena Gershowitz (70).

Reports indicated that the family was returning home from a hospital just hours before the missile hit. Unfortunately, they did not make it to shelter in time.

According to the Home Front Command, their bodies were discovered near the stairwell of the building. President Isaac Herzog expressed his condolences to the Gershowitz family on social media, thanking first responders for their dedication during the crisis.

He referred to the Gershowitz family as “a wonderful family that was tragically wiped out by a criminal Iranian missile in Haifa last night.” He acknowledged the professionalism of the fire and rescue services involved.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps took responsibility for the missile assault but did not specify the target.
