Iranian president: Trump's actions might ignite conflict in the Middle East

Concerns Over U.S. Actions in the Middle East

Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian expressed concerns on Friday regarding the potential volatility in the Middle East, attributing it to actions taken by the Trump administration. He suggested that the recent U.S. policies could have severe repercussions for the region.

Pezeshkian remarked, “President Trump stated that his administration aims for peace, but I think the direction they’re taking could ignite conflict throughout the entire region.” This statement follows his earlier comments at the UN General Assembly.

During that address, he criticized the United States and Israel, claiming that their actions have had a “devastating impact on international trust and the prospects for peace.” He referred specifically to military operations that targeted Iranian cities and infrastructure.

In June, Israel had deployed aircraft against Iranian nuclear facilities amid a conflict that involved substantial combat actions. The U.S. also participated by conducting airstrikes on key Iranian sites. Trump, however, warned that more military action could follow if peace was not swiftly achieved.

This conflict reportedly resulted in numerous casualties for Iran, affecting military leaders, scientists, and civilians alike, while about 28 Israeli lives were lost during the same period. Pezeshkian shared that he personally sustained a foot injury during the hostilities.

In an attempt to engage diplomatically, Pezeshkian’s visit to the U.S. seems aimed at navigating potential sanctions that the UN might impose regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He noted welcoming international inspectors and allowing the International Atomic Energy Agency to conduct on-ground inspections.

If sanctions are indeed reinstated, Pezeshkian warned that they could severely affect Iran’s already struggling economy, potentially freezing assets abroad and hindering missile program advancements, among other penalties.
