Iran's actions highlight DHS shutdown as agency workers miss their pay

The ongoing partial government shutdown has resulted in Department of Homeland Security employees going without pay, even as the United States engages in airstrikes that have escalated tensions with Iran.

In the early hours of Saturday, U.S. and Israeli forces targeted Iranian strongholds, including the residence of dictator Ali Hosseini Khamenei, who later was reported dead by officials in Jerusalem. This airstrike has prompted fears of potential backlash within the U.S.

“I am in direct contact with our federal intelligence and law enforcement partners to monitor and prevent any possible threats to our homeland,” stated DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

As the shutdown unfolded, Transportation Safety Board employees found themselves working without compensation, with the agency praising them as “models of selflessness and sacrifice.”

“Because of the irresponsible shutdown of the Transportation Security Administration, TSA staff are expected to report to work without pay, while Democratic members of Congress continue to receive their salaries,” the agency remarked, accusing Democrats of engaging in “political theater” that complicates life for employees and their families.

On Saturday, lawmakers highlighted the inconsistency, especially as Iran promises to retaliate, and attention shifts toward the safety of the U.S. homeland. Rep. Daniel Muser (R-Pennsylvania) remarked, “Given the events in the Middle East and the ongoing threat from Iran and its terrorist affiliates, Democrats must stop politicizing this issue and swiftly fund the Department of Homeland Security.”

Muser, representing the area where the newly purchased Shartlesville Immigration Center is located, criticized blocking funds to DHS amid increased global tensions, calling it “irresponsible and dangerous.” He added that protecting Americans is a fundamental duty of the federal government, and delays concerning national security are unacceptable.

Senator David McCormick echoed these thoughts, urging Democrats to abandon their resistance to funding DHS and pass relevant legislation that ensures homeland security. He expressed concerns over the dangerous implications of continuing political maneuvering while the situation in the Middle East unfolds.

While many Democrats have criticized the Trump administration’s military actions, Congressman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi expressed skepticism about the operation, saying it lacks a “clear strategy.” He further indicated that the U.S. is “vulnerable to additional terrorist attacks due to President Trump’s reckless actions.”

Amid the ongoing shutdown, Democratic leaders in both the House and Senate issued a joint statement addressing the current situation, noting they are carefully considering the White House’s counterproposal and remain committed to pursuing meaningful reforms concerning ICE and violence.
