IRS announces income tax brackets and standard deductions for 2026

Impact of New Spending Law on Taxes

The IRS adjusts income limits for federal tax brackets annually, considering inflation. This change could offer some financial relief for Americans when they file their taxes in the coming year.

Typically, these adjustments happen around October or November, aiming to prevent what’s known as “bracket creep.” This issue arises when inflation pushes taxpayers into higher brackets, resulting in them paying more in taxes when April rolls around.

Essentially, this means that people will need to earn more next year to hit those elevated tax rates. For instance, a single filer earning $50,000 will face a tax rate of 12% in 2026, compared to 22% in 2025.

Here’s the updated tax classification:

Standard Deduction Updates

Along with changes to tax brackets, the IRS revealed adjustments to the standard deduction for 2026.

  • Married couples filing jointly can claim a standard deduction of $32,200.
  • Heads of household will see a standard deduction of $24,150.
  • Single taxpayers and married individuals will have a standard deduction of $16,100.

Additionally, seniors may benefit from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes a temporary tax credit of up to $6,000 for those aged 65 and older. This tax cut, set to expire at the end of 2028, applies to individuals with adjusted gross incomes of $75,000 or less, or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.

On another note, the IRS announced that furloughs will start on October 8 due to federal spending lapses caused by the government shutdown. Taxpayers who have an extension deadline of October 15 are advised to file their returns on time.

A spokesperson indicated that taxpayers should continue their regular filing and payment practices. The expiration of appropriations won’t alter their federal income tax obligations.
