As various Christian influencers on social media discuss receiving divine signs through worldly symbols, Blaze TV host Allie Beth Stuckey calls for believers to exercise caution and discernment.
Stuckey acknowledges that the desire to seek signs from God is “natural and understandable,” yet cautions that this approach can create increased anxiety and confusion, both personally and for those around us.
For instance, one influencer shared an emotional story on Instagram about asking God for a blue bird to appear on her window sill as a sign about whether she should write a book.
Stuckey mentioned the rising trend of Christians seeking similar bluebird signs, which have gained popularity on various platforms. “It’s interesting how quickly these creators have latched onto this notion,” she observed.
While she does warn against this trend, Stuckey also recognizes that biblical examples do exist where asking God for signs was appropriate. For instance, in Genesis 24, Abraham’s servant sought clear signs while searching for a wife for Isaac. He prayed specifically for a woman who would not only give him water but also offer to water his camels, which is exactly what happened with Rebecca.
In another biblical instance, Moses, when called by God to lead the Israelites, expressed doubts and received confirming signs such as his staff transforming into a serpent and his hand becoming leprous, only to be healed again.
Stuckey emphasizes that while it is acceptable to ask God for signs, the Bible warns against doing so as a way to affirm God’s character or intentions, particularly if it’s driven by doubt or disbelief.
She suggests that aligning one’s theology with New Age beliefs could be detrimental, stating, “I think we risk as much trouble as ancient Israel did when influenced by outside pagan cultures,” which can harm our spiritual well-being.
