Islanders’ Mike Reilly finally returns to play following heart surgery

SAN JOSE, CA – Sweat was still clung to Mike Riley's face and covering her hair as she detailed the last four months since she left the ice on Saturday morning.

He was breathing hard – the blood pump, the heart was working. These are small miracles and things you only notice after your doctor tells you something might be missing.

Riley may now notice them for the rest of his life.

“It was tough,” Riley said. Riley was active from a long-term injury sanctuary Saturday morning and was able to play immediately after undergoing cardiac surgery. “There's a lot of vacation. When I got here last year, I got a bit of love for the game back after a tough year with Florida. When I got here last year, I thought things went well, it was great, I'm going to build it this year.

“I'm probably just as excited as I've been a year for a while. It obviously takes 10, 11 games, 180 times, so it's difficult.

“I have a lot of time in my hands. I have to find a way to do it for a while. The toughest thing for me was that I couldn't travel. So it was just about most of the time. It was tough. I had my parents visit a few times, brother, sister. Such little things mean a lot. I reached out to a lot of people, a lot of fans. I'm very grateful for that, people are in my corner.”

This all began with a concussion when Riley was knocked to the ice by Jordan Greenway against the Sabres on November 1st and did not wake up.

He was growing, and the closest to the positive outcome of the night was the Beaubat, who the team said Riley was told he was talking.

That was not as bad as it had with Reilly recovering within a few weeks.

However, during the process, the tests discovered a heart abnormality. Details are private.

It required surgery and Riley was told that the islanders had communicated quickly, but that it wasn't a career ending, or even a long-term issue, but these things are inherently frightening.

“Obviously I was going to meet a specialist for my head,” Riley said before the islanders had a 4-2 victory over the Sharks. “And then, something that was heart-related, it was crushed, because something came out of it. When I got all the news, it was a lot.”

Riley returned to the ice in mid-December, and most of them skated themselves.

He recently began contacting and began his trip a few weeks ago when the islanders went to Boston.

He didn't play the Shark after being activated on Saturday, but there's no definitive plan yet as to when he'll return, but he doesn't sound like he'll be featured in any game while the islanders are in California – he'll play this season.

“I feel like I'm ready to play,” Riley said. “This is basically my first road trip because I couldn't travel this year. I feel good. My teammates were there. It's difficult not to travel with the team. There were some squirts that I would become the only guy I've returned, but that's tough.

“Obviously, we've had a lot of injuries. Sometimes I'm with another guy. [back on Long Island]. As soon as possible [they] Back from the trip, they ask, check in, see how I'm doing, and make me feel a part of it. It clearly feels really good. ”

There's a hockey question here, but in this case it seems almost absurd to worry about.

How Reilly fits now with the nine-depth blue lines is still unanswered.

The same goes for what he looks like after being out of the ice for over four months.

The mere act of being still here is an overwhelming victory.

“It was a lot of work and sometimes a lot of unknowns that I was going to go back here,” Riley said. “For me, in my entire career, it wasn't sometimes smooth sailing. It became another clash on the road. Obviously this is all health-related, bow your head and keep working honestly. It's all I can control is my attitude, come to the link with a smile on my face. It's going to be very special. [to play again]. ”

Without Brock Nelson, the islanders lack forwards.

They also have a surplus of defenders with nine people on the active roster as of Saturday after Raylee was activated.

So expect heavy spins on the backend. Perhaps play the opposite dynamic ahead of time in the final 21 games of the season.

Adam Bocvist was pulled back after Adam Bocvist won the Jets on Tuesday for the Sharks Saturday victory, which traveled three games across California, Scott Mayfield, Scott Pernovich and Riley.

For now, when the islanders want to attack, they seem to be the dynamic of going with the Bokvist, who can hurry and play on power play.

When their preferences prefer size and stability, they go with Mayfield.

Matt Martinwas was activated from IR in addition to Reilly.

Marcus Hogberga hasn't been activated yet, but continued skating with his team on Saturday morning.
