Leftists blame President Trump for USMNT World Cup loss
In recent discussions, FOX News personalities Kellyanne Conway and Tomi Lahren responded to sports fans attributing the U.S. men’s national team’s (USMNT) World Cup defeat to Donald Trump. They delved into the concept of the “Trump curse” and examined Trump’s decisions regarding suspensions of leading athletes. Lahren characterized the left as, in her view, a fundamental source of opposition to America, frequently holding Trump accountable for the country’s difficulties and failures.
The aftermath of the USMNT’s exit from the tournament has stirred conversations, and former U.S. women’s national team player Megan Rapinoe has shared her insights.
And, you might be surprised to learn, she specifically points fingers at President Trump.
During discussions surrounding a key match against Belgium, much attention focused on the red card and subsequent suspension faced by American player Folarin Balogun.
It seems that many felt this decision was misguided. In response, the president reached out to FIFA, which allowed Balogun to participate under the same regulations that permitted Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo to do so in a similar scenario.
However, with Trump involved, not everyone was pleased. On her podcast, Rapinoe noted that the situation surrounding Trump’s communication with FIFA was distracting for the team, reflecting the emotional turmoil of the moment.
“I definitely think that confusion filtered through to the team, whether it was about the red card or the public interaction with this president,” Rapinoe elaborated. “It’s a lot to deal with, regardless of your opinion on it.”
That perspective makes a fair amount of sense.
Having dealt with distractions before, Rapinoe emphasized a lack of players willing to engage in political discussions off the field—something she has often done herself.
“This team lacks older players accustomed to such pressures, and often, the younger ones are silent,” she remarked. “I don’t see many in men’s soccer who are eager to use their platforms and take on extra responsibilities.”
It’s interesting, then, to consider the possibility that their challenges weren’t simply due to facing a formidable Belgian side or just an off day.
Perhaps Rapinoe feels that if they had more distractions, they might adapt to handling those pressures better.
Whether or not she is looking toward a coaching future, her approach might complicate potential opportunities.
