Israel and Hamas restart discussions on hostages and ceasefire during new IDF military action

Negotiations aimed at achieving peace between Israel and Hamas resumed on Saturday after Israel launched a significant military action in Gaza. During this time, ten living hostages were freed, and discussions included a potential ceasefire lasting one to two months.

Officials from both parties acknowledged that mediators from Qatar were facilitating indirect talks, noting that the recent military operations had increased pressure on terrorist groups involved.

Israel’s Defense Minister remarked on Saturday that the intense military campaign, dubbed Operation Gideon, had led the Hamas delegation in Doha to reconsider their position and engage in negotiations concerning a hostage exchange, which they had previously rejected.

A Hamas representative mentioned to Reuters that both sides were willing to address various topics without any prior conditions.

For Israel, it was essential that Hamas agree to the continuation of a hostage release plan and a ceasefire framework initially suggested by US special envoy Steve Witkov, according to reports from Israeli media.

On Saturday, discussions considered exchanging ten live prisoners for up to 250 Palestinian detainees, along with a proposed ceasefire lasting between 1.5 to 2 months.

Hamas is also expected to provide comprehensive updates on the status of 58 remaining hostages, of which a significant number have been reported dead.

Despite the ongoing discussions, progress seems limited, as Israel has emphasized the necessity of defeating Hamas as a condition for any ceasefire, whereas Hamas seeks to halt the conflict and secure a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Nevertheless, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed teams to remain in Doha to pursue agreements on both the ceasefire and the hostage negotiations.

Israel conducted numerous airstrikes in Gaza on Friday, which officials categorized as preparatory actions aimed at pressuring Hamas to release hostages.

Operation Gideon, named after notable biblical figures, has reportedly succeeded in gaining control over key areas within Gaza, moving civilians further south, and thwarting Hamas efforts to divert aid amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Israeli ground forces advanced towards Deial Balau in central Gaza overnight on Saturday.

The Defense Minister targeted Mohammed Sinwar, the head of Hamas’ military wing, believed to be the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the leader responsible for the attack that triggered the ongoing conflict.

So far, there has been no confirmation on Mohamed Sinwar’s status following an airstrike on a Gaza hospital that served as a Hamas base.

During a visit to the Middle East, Trump commented on the situation, stating, “We have to take care of it,” highlighting the dire circumstances many are facing.

A Palestinian woman was also seen taking shelter with others displaced by the conflict in Dale Al Bala, highlighting the plight of civilians amid the intensified fighting.
