Road closures and mass evacuation paralyzed the nation, and Israel was forced to cancel the Independence Day Torchlight Ceremony due to a massive wildfire that broke out near Jerusalem on Wednesday.

“Our volunteers were searching for a car that had their bodies abandoned on the highway. It was back on October 7th,” Eribeel, president of United Hatzara Ambulance Services, told the American media.
Strong winds ignited more wildfires, starting in the forest near Jerusalem. Route 1 roads linking Jerusalem to Tel Aviv have been closed due to a fire, forcing at least 10 communities to be evacuated.
According to Israeli media, 12 planes and 163 firefighters were dispatched to put out the fire. As of May 1stst2025, at 12:30pm, no deaths from wildfires have been reported. However, the fires have caused serious injuries and damage across the country.
At least 13 people have been reported to be injured, and the fire burns 5,000 acres (approximately 20,000 Dunham) including around 3,200 acres of forest.
The Jewish state was forced to postpone the annual torch illuminating ritual to mark the signature of the Declaration of Independence. Instead, they broadcast a practice video. Several other Independence Day celebrations were also cancelled when firefighters fought to contain the fire.

Additionally, Israeli authorities are currently arresting at least 18 people on suspicion of arson in connection with a wildfire near Jerusalem, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We are suspected of 18 people causing a fire,” he said.
The Jewish Prime Minister detailed how one suspect was even arrested “in the act” that he was “starting a fire.” The International Bible Contest is an annual competition that tests Jewish middle and high school students with knowledge of Tanaf (Hebrew Bible). The contest, held annually in Jerusalem at Yomhatzmat (Israel Independence Day), is Israel's central cultural and educational event.
Meanwhile, outdoor video filmed in the scene of the flames continued to show that the flames near Jerusalem were engulfed in flames, and charred trees burned on a hill near the fire that was descending a long route.
