Remembering Hostages in Israel

TEL AVIV, Israel — On Saturday, Israelis commemorated a year since IDF soldiers retrieved the bodies of six hostages executed by Hamas terrorists in a Gaza Strip tunnel.

Nearly 100,000 people reportedly gathered in Hostage Square, Tel Aviv, to honor their loved ones and urged the government to finalize agreements for their return. A large flag was displayed, calling on President Trump to “make history.”

The tragic executions cast a shadow over the nation. The hostages included Eden Erushalmi, Oli Danino, Carmel Gatt, Almog Sarsi, Alexander Robanov, and American Hirsch Goldberg Polin.

“To encapsulate my son in just a few words feels impossible. He was a gift—a kind, curious citizen of the world,” Rachel Goldberg Polin, Hirsch’s mother, shared with Fox News Digital.

Israeli hostages had been rescued after nearly 700 days in captivity in Gaza.

The grief was palpable as Hirsch’s family reflected—he was always 23 in their minds. “He wasn’t flawless, but he was perfect for us. We feel blessed to have had him,” she continued.

This anniversary coincided with Israel’s renewed military operations in Gaza, sparking debate about the potential risk to remaining hostages, a painful echo of what happened to the “Beautiful Six.”

The Hostage and Missing Family Forum raised concerns that negotiations for hostages might stall amid military actions, reiterating last year’s painful lesson: military pressure can jeopardize hostages’ lives.

“This nightmare has to end! Our loved ones have suffered for 694 days. It’s disorienting as a nation,” one organizer stated.

On Friday, the IDF announced the recovery of two bodies of hostages held by Palestinian terrorists in Gaza.

Israeli estimates indicate that 48 prisoners are still in captivity, with 20 known to be alive.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that only a comprehensive ceasefire that guarantees the return of all hostages would be considered.

“Families want all hostages home,” said Zvika Moh, father of hostage Eitan Moh and co-founder of the Tikva Forum. He noted differing views among families on negotiating terms with Hamas.

“This clearly divides us,” Moh remarked. “The Tikva Forum believes Hamas must be defeated, while others think Israel should surrender to rescue the hostages.” Drawing parallels to the 1976 Entebbe rescue, he argued for fighting for citizens rather than capitulating to terrorists, despite the risks of military actions.

On Monday, Donald Trump stated that he expected the conflict could resolve within weeks, following a meeting at the White House about plans for Gaza’s postwar future.

Special US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, shared that the Trump administration is aligned with Jerusalem regarding partial agreements. He mentioned that a contract had been on the table for several weeks, with Hamas contributing to a slower negotiation process.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid expressed support for a comprehensive agreement for returning all hostages and ending the war.

Netanyahu met with Senator Joni Ernst, affirming that the decision to escalate military operations was “clear.”
