Israel’s Strategy in Gaza: Arming Clans Against Hamas
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that Israel is actively supplying arms to certain clans within the Gaza Strip to combat Hamas, as reported by the BBC.
Netanyahu’s remarks align with reports from Israeli media indicating that the government is equipping the Abu Shabaab clan, led by Yassar Abu Shabaab, to counteract Hamas. This statement has stirred up some criticism, with several Israeli politicians expressing concerns that this strategy may jeopardize Israeli lives. In response, Netanyahu has defended his approach as an innovative means to exert pressure on Hamas.
“What’s wrong with this?” he stated, emphasizing that it’s a step intended to protect Israeli soldiers.
Defense sources have indicated that Kalashnikov rifles provided by Israel have been seized by groups initially affiliated with Hamas. Some analysts have pointed out that the Abu Shabaab clan resembles more of a militia or criminal gang than a traditional familial group.
The clan, despite positioning itself as a challenger to Hamas, has reportedly been involved in looting aid vehicles meant for a population facing dire shortages of food and medical care in Gaza. Yassar Abu Shabaab has refuted claims that his group is receiving arms from Israel, attributing their weapons instead to “support from our people.”
Israeli opposition politician Avigdor Lieberman criticized Netanyahu’s decision, suggesting that this was made unilaterally. He noted that the clan operates largely in the Rafah area of Gaza, which is currently under control of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
“The Israeli government is arming groups of criminals and felons identified with extremist factions,” Lieberman remarked, adding that this action hasn’t been sanctioned by the cabinet.
Recent months have seen stagnation in peace talks between Hamas and Israel, coinciding with Israel’s renewed bombings in Gaza following the breakdown of a brief ceasefire in March. While facing mounting international pressure to cease hostilities, Netanyahu continues to push the conflict forward, recently initiating “Operation Gideon,” aimed at taking full control of Gaza.
As of now, Netanyahu’s office has not provided any comment on these developments.
