Israel Dismisses Starmer's Shift on Palestinian State: 'A Reward for Hamas'

Israel swiftly dismissed British Minister Kiel Starmer’s announcement on Tuesday that the UK is prepared to endorse the recognition of a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

In a statement shared on X, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed:

Israel stands against the British Prime Minister’s announcement.

Amid pressures from French initiatives and domestic political dynamics, this shift in the UK government’s stance is seen as a concession to Hamas, which could impede ongoing efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

As reported by Breitbart News, this decision came as Starmer faced mounting pressure from leftist elements within his Labour party, without any requirements from the Palestinians for concessions in return.

The Prime Minister indicated that Hamas needs to understand that it cannot simply release all remaining hostages or disarm and still influence future governance.

However, he did not clarify the boundaries of the proposed Palestinian state. Questions remain about what kind of government is necessary, especially considering the current authoritarian nature under Palestinian administration. There’s also the pressing issue of whether this state would be demilitarized.

Overall, Israel opposes creating a Palestinian state, viewing it as a consequence of the conflict initiated by Hamas, which it has since lost. Prior to this escalation, in 2013, there was support in Israel for a two-state solution to the Palestinian conflict, but the resurgence of fear and violence from Hamas has shifted public perception significantly against this idea.

Starmer’s statement followed a meeting with Scotland’s President Donald Trump. Trump has voiced his opposition to the notion of a Palestinian state, citing the absence of a negotiated settlement. It remains unclear whether the UK had informed the Trump administration of this policy shift ahead of its announcement.
