Israel gets coffin containing remains of Gaza hostage from Hamas

Israel Receives Coffin of Hostage Killed in Gaza

On Wednesday, Israel took custody of a coffin that is believed to hold the remains of one of two last hostages killed in Gaza.

The coffin, accompanied by IDF soldiers, crossed into Israel and is being sent to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine for identification procedures, according to reports from the Israel Defense Forces.

This coffin, transported by the Red Cross, may contain the remains of either Ran Gviri or Sudisak Rintalak.

Calls for Action from Hostage Families

Gviri was a police officer in Israel’s anti-terrorism unit, and his story is particularly poignant. He was waiting for shoulder surgery on October 7, 2023, but instead chose to join his fellow officers in the fight to protect others. He was ultimately killed near Kibbutz Al-Mim, and his body has remained in Gaza for nearly 790 days.

In a heartfelt expression, Gviri’s mother shared her anguish: “When this nightmare began, there were 255 hostages. Their families became one big family. Each time someone returned, it felt like a piece of us came back. Now, we are left in the darkness, and I fear my orchid will be left behind.”

Rintalak, a 43-year-old farmer from Thailand, was killed during the same attack while working to support his family back home. His family shared that, just before his death, he had plans to return to Thailand permanently once he saved enough money.

In a poignant quote, Rintalak’s mother expressed her heartache: “We hadn’t seen him in years, and he had told us he wanted to come back for good. I just want my son home.”

On Tuesday, Israel reportedly received remains that were later confirmed not to be those of Gviri or Rintalak. Findings included “small remains and fragments,” according to a senior Red Cross official.
