Israel Approves Intensified Military Action Against Hamas
Israel has greenlighted a new strategy to escalate its military operations against Hamas, according to an announcement made by the group on Monday. This plan aims to take total control of Gaza and its territories.
Dubbed Operation Gideon’s Tank, the initiative received approval from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet in a vote held Monday morning. This came promptly after the Israeli military chief indicated a renewed effort to mobilize thousands of reserves to confront Hamas.
The implementation of this plan is expected to span several months and includes large-scale attacks on Hamas positions. This decision occurs in the wake of increased pressure on terrorist factions following Israel’s setbacks in March.
As reported by the Israeli public broadcaster Kan, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir addressed the troops on Sunday, communicating that Israeli operations against Hamas would see a significant uptick.
“This week, we will issue tens of thousands of reserve call-ups to enhance and expand our operations in Gaza,” Zamir remarked. “Our objective is to intensify pressure to reclaim territory and defeat Hamas. We will be active in more areas, targeting all infrastructure above and below ground.”
Additionally, Security Cabinet Minister Seef Elkin remarked that this military plan might open avenues for negotiations regarding a possible ceasefire and the release of hostages, particularly with President Donald Trump planning a visit next week.
“If Hamas recognizes that we are serious, there remains an opportunity until President Trump finishes his trip to the Middle East,” Elkin stated. “Should we fail to secure a hostage exchange, the Gideon’s Tank operation will fully commence and will not cease until all objectives are met,” he added.
At the same time, Israel has imposed a full blockade on Gaza, halting humanitarian aid for over two months.
Elkin stated that rather than conducting raids and withdrawing, Israeli forces will focus on firmly establishing their presence in the seized territories to completely eliminate Hamas.
