Israel Increases Attacks On Gaza City

Escalation of Conflict in Gaza

Over the weekend, Israeli forces intensified their assault on Gaza, prompting more civilians to flee amid ongoing air strikes and ground artillery fire.

This uptick in violence precedes a scheduled meeting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet, where they will discuss strategies for taking control of the city.

Residents from Sheikradwan, one of the larger regions in Gaza, reported to news sources that the bombardment from Israeli tanks and aircraft has been relentless since Saturday. “It’s chaotic in the heart of the city… They’re attacking from both the air and ground, making it frightening for people to even think about leaving,” stated Regik Sarah, a local resident.

On Friday, Israeli forces labeled the city a “dangerous combat zone,” effectively ending a brief pause that had allowed for limited humanitarian aid deliveries in recent weeks, according to reports.

Gaza Health Authorities reported that at least 30 individuals lost their lives on Sunday, including 13 near central Gaza’s aid distribution site. The Israeli military claimed it was unaware of any casualties occurring close to these humanitarian areas.

Additionally, authorities in Gaza indicated that 15 people, including five children, died in another airstrike that targeted a residential building.

Netanyahu stated on Sunday that Israeli forces aimed at targeting Abu Ubaida, a long-time spokesperson for Hamas’s armed wing. Israeli Minister of Defense Katz claimed Ubaida was killed in the strikes.

When reached for comments, Hamas officials chose not to respond to inquiries.

The Netanyahu cabinet is anticipated to convene later on Sunday to decide on the next steps in the ongoing attack. Full-scale ground operations are not expected in the immediate future, as Israel aims to evacuate civilians before proceeding further.
