On Monday, the Israeli Defense Secretary indicated that President Trump’s upcoming visit to the Middle East might serve as a “window of opportunity” for negotiating a hostage trade. Without such a deal, however, Israel plans to initiate a new military operation in the Gaza Strip.
The official stated, “If a hostage arrangement is not reached, Operation Gideon Chariot will commence with significant force and will continue until all objectives are met.” This move follows a decision made by the Israeli security cabinet to expand operations in Gaza.
Israel is gearing up for new military actions, expecting to mobilize tens of thousands of reservists over an estimated ten-day period, with the intention of fully taking control of the Gaza Strip.
As part of efforts against Hamas, the Israeli Defense Forces plan to remain in the territories they capture rather than withdrawing after the operation concludes. However, Israel has yet to outline a plan regarding how long it intends to occupy Palestinian areas, which could breach existing treaties and recognized borders.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding this aggressive stance.
The Hostages and Missing Family Forum criticized the government’s strategy, suggesting it prioritizes territory over the release of hostages and undermines national security. They noted that recent polls show over 70% of Israelis oppose a military approach regarding hostages.
During his planned trip to the Middle East, Trump is aiming to underscore its importance to U.S. interests, marking his first international tour since his earlier visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
This visit is expected to carry significant geopolitical implications. Notably, his earlier trip included a significant meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during Pope Francis’s funeral in Italy.
Neither the White House nor the State Department has yet addressed inquiries about Israel’s more aggressive posture and its impact on hostages and peace negotiations.
Hamas hostage parents have urged Trump to advocate firmly with both allies and adversaries amid the ongoing Israeli siege in Gaza.
Netanyahu’s recent comments may have backtracked efforts for a ceasefire after Hamas confirmed that it had returned the first hostages last week, victims filmed by the group nearly 580 days ago.
“We have multiple objectives in this conflict. Retrieving all hostages is crucial,” Netanyahu expressed. He justified the increasingly aggressive military tactics, which have reportedly resulted in over 50,000 fatalities in Gaza, a figure according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The defense of operations in Gaza as a means to protect “civilization” has been criticized, with some arguing it perpetuates a false narrative justifying civilian casualties.
Qatar, involved in hostage negotiations and ceasefire discussions, responded on social media expressing that such comments fall short of basic political and moral standards.
Majed Al Ansari, an advisor to the Qatari Prime Minister, emphasized the longstanding use of these narratives to justify actions against innocent lives.
