Israeli Forces Prepare for Major Military Operation in Gaza

Israeli military officials have announced plans to mobilize tens of thousands of reservists as they gear up for a significant military operation in Gaza.

In a statement on Wednesday, anonymous sources from the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) mentioned that operations would soon commence in Gaza City, which remains a stronghold for Hamas militants.

“We are entering a new phase of combat, focusing on precise and targeted actions in and around Gaza City, now identified as Hamas’ primary military and governing center,” noted an official.

Further details reveal that Israeli forces will aim to dismantle underground tunnel networks that Hamas utilizes for military purposes.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has given the green light to a new military strategy that involves calling up 60,000 reservists while extending the service of an additional 20,000 personnel. This brings the total number of active reserves to approximately 120,000, nearly double the current figure.

This plan was reportedly championed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prior to its approval by the Israeli Security Council.

In statements earlier this month, Netanyahu emphasized that the goal of the impending offensive is to achieve the release of remaining hostages and to eliminate Hamas to prevent future threats to Israel.

Israeli troops are currently active in the Jabarya and Zeitoun areas of Gaza City as they prepare for further military actions.

Gaza City, described by Netanyahu as Hamas’ “last true fortress,” serves as a critical hub for Iran-backed militant groups, housing hundreds of thousands of civilians.

The planned operations, anticipated to begin soon, have sparked controversy. On Sunday, thousands protested in Tel Aviv, urging the government to prioritize the release of hostages still being held in Gaza. Israeli officials argue that dismantling Hamas’ base is vital for the safe return of these hostages and to avert future acts of violence similar to the events of October 7th.

The conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a brutal attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the abduction of approximately 250 individuals. As of August 20th, out of the 255 hostages, 205 have returned to Israel. Of the remaining 50, Israeli authorities believe that around 20 are still alive.
