Israel Launches Attacks on Iran’s Nuclear and Military Targets
On Thursday night, Israel conducted multiple strikes aimed at Iran’s nuclear and military installations, effectively targeting critical components of the country’s nuclear program, air defense systems, and military leadership.
This unilateral action, emphasized by the Trump administration, faced backlash from neighboring Arab nations and elicited a mixed response from American politicians.
Details of the Strike
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated, “Some time ago, Israel launched Operation Raising Lion, which is focused on reducing the threat Iran poses to Israel’s very existence.” He mentioned that this operation would continue for as long as necessary to eliminate the threat.
The Israeli Air Force deployed over 200 jets, hitting sites in various Iranian cities, including Tabriz, Kermanshah, Arak, Isfahan, Natanz, and the capital, Tehran. Reports indicate that residential buildings were damaged, with one large structure ablaze and military command centers targeted.
The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed that one of the objectives in the Natanz area was a long-standing uranium enrichment facility, reportedly working on expanding nuclear weapons capabilities. The strike reportedly caused significant damage to its underground infrastructure, including electrical rooms and other supporting facilities.
Israel also attacked numerous radar systems and surface-to-air missile launchers, diminishing Iran’s air defense capabilities.
Both Israeli and Iranian sources reported that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Hossein Salami was among those killed. Additionally, Israeli officials indicated the deaths of Major General Mohammad Bagheri, head of the Iranian military staff, and Golam Ali Rashid, a significant commander.
The IDF described these individuals as “three ruthless mass murderers with international ties,” asserting that their absence would improve global security.
Reactions from the U.S.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran, emphasizing that the U.S. was not involved in the strike and prioritizing the protection of our troops in the region.” He noted that Israel believed this action was essential for self-defense.
However, the recent tension escalated as Iranian leaders warned that U.S. bases could be targeted if the situation worsened, suggesting a serious potential for conflict.
Trump commented that he did not want another regional conflict, despite acknowledging that the current trajectory might lead to one. He expressed concerns about the implications of a new conflict while emphasizing the strength of U.S.-Israeli military capabilities.
Trump also indicated that Iran had squandered numerous opportunities to strike a deal, highlighting the potency of American military technology and Israel’s preparedness.
Iran’s Response
The Iranian government condemned the Israeli attack as a violation of international law. They asserted a responsibility to defend their sovereignty and emphasized that retaliation is a rightful response to such aggression.
Reports suggested that Iran launched around 100 drones toward Israeli territory in retaliation, with Israeli authorities confirming they were working to counter the threat.
This situation is ongoing and may develop further.
