Israeli intelligence leader travels to Qatar to renew Gaza peace discussions, officials report

The leader of the Israeli Mossad, David Barnea, traveled to Qatar recently to reignite talks regarding a ceasefire and potential hostage exchanges involving Hamas, as stated by officials.

During his meeting with Qatar’s Prime Minister, Abdul Rahman al-Thani, Barnea aimed to encourage both Israel and the United States to return to Doha and continue discussions that had stalled. This pause occurred after accusations arose regarding Hamas not engaging in discussions with sincere intent, as per information from two officials of the Jewish state.

This visit from Barnea coincides with Hamas dispatching its negotiation team to Cairo, seeking to rejuvenate peace efforts. The group claims it is ready to relinquish control over Gaza but remains steadfast about its armaments.

The ongoing hopes for a resolution to the conflict, which has persisted for over 21 months, have been clouded by claims that Hamas showed little interest in achieving a ceasefire after the withdrawal of the US and Israel from negotiations last month.

Frustration at the negotiation table arose from Hamas’s unwillingness to secure and demilitarize the Gaza Strip, leading Israel to reject proposals that aimed to set the groundwork for a complete military exit and enduring peace.

Recently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated intentions for a comprehensive military takeover of Gaza following ongoing violent events.

In response, some Hamas officials expressed readiness to transfer Gaza’s governance to a neutral committee, as reported by one official to Reuters.

Yet, Hamas, identifying itself as a resistance faction, has asserted it will not recognize a Palestinian state until it is officially established.

Netanyahu has consistently opposed the notion of a Palestinian state, arguing that acknowledging such a state would only benefit Hamas, particularly in light of the attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 fatalities and 250 kidnappings in Israel.

Current efforts for a ceasefire, according to Netanyahu, prioritize reaching a singular, complete agreement for the release of all remaining hostages simultaneously.

In his conversation with Al-Thani, Barnea emphasized that “partial deals are off the table,” according to a senior Israeli official.
