Israeli Leader Netanyahu to Undergo Prostate Removal Surgery

(UPI) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and will undergo surgery to remove his prostate on Sunday, his office announced.

A statement released to the press on Saturday said the 75-year-old Israeli leader underwent tests at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem on Wednesday, which detected a urinary tract infection caused by an enlarged prostate.

“Over the past few days, the prime minister has been treated with antibiotics, which has successfully eradicated the infection,” the statement said. “The Prime Minister will therefore undergo surgery tomorrow to remove his prostate. Further details will be provided later.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced Sunday's cabinet meeting would be held as scheduled despite the formalities.

As a result of this strategy, the prime minister is likely not to appear in court on Monday on corruption charges and may also miss meetings scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The surgery was Prime Minister Netanyahu's second this year, with the prime minister undergoing surgery to treat a hernia in March.

Last year, he was hospitalized after an abnormality was discovered in his heart and had a pacemaker installed.

He also underwent hernia surgery in 2013.
