UN Tensions Rise Over Gaza Statements
UN officials have come under fire from Israel’s UN ambassador after comments made regarding the situation in Gaza. Tom Fletcher, the UN Humanitarian Agency’s Emergency Relief Coordinator, asserted that Israel is committing genocide in his address to the UN Security Council.
Fletcher criticized Israel’s actions, stating that it is “deliberately and embarrassingly restricting the dire circumstances faced by civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory.” He noted that much of Gaza is either within a militarized zone or under evacuation directives.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Foreign Minister condemned the UN, labeling it “a rotten, anti-Israel, anti-Semitic body.” Fletcher, who oversees the UN Office for Humanitarian Coordination, elaborated on the grim conditions in Gaza, highlighting that aid trucks have not been permitted access for over ten weeks, leading to a humanitarian crisis in hospitals already burdened by hunger and illness.
He called for urgent action, asking, “For those who have been killed and those who cannot speak: do you yet need more evidence? Will you take steps to prevent genocide and uphold international humanitarian law?”
On May 14, a violent incident in the West Bank added to Fletcher’s concerns, as a pregnant woman was killed while en route to the hospital, though her baby was saved.
In response, Danon expressed his shock and disapproval at Fletcher’s statements, accusing UN officials of making “inappropriate and deeply irresponsible” claims that undermine the concept of neutrality. He rebuked Fletcher for alleging genocide “without evidence, mandate, or restraint” and criticized him for giving what he characterized as a political sermon during a UN meeting.
Reacting to the uproar, an OCHA spokesperson commented that legal experts are evaluating whether genocide is taking place, but emphasized Fletcher’s concerns for Palestinian civilians, including teachers and artists, amidst the conflict.
Danon further criticized the use of the term “genocide” as a careless misrepresentation of a term of considerable significance, especially given that Israel had been in dialogue with Fletcher’s office at the highest levels. He concluded by urging that actions must be taken to ensure safety and security, questioning the accountability of Hamas in the ongoing conflict.
Fletcher had expressed his grief during previous visits, particularly to Kibbutz, where substantial loss of life had occurred, showing his awareness and concern regarding the humanitarian crisis unfolding.
