‘It Concerns a Criminal Organization’

During the trial on Monday, prosecutors described Sean “Diddy” Combs as a “dishonest, jealous, sometimes angry” individual who resorted to violence and intimidation to maintain control over a woman he had reportedly abused for years.

Combs, who is 55, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include assault claims involving hip-hop figures and the use of force, threats, and violence to operate sex crime rings linked to drug-infused parties.

“He was… a cultural icon, a businessman, larger than life — but he had another aspect to him; he ran a criminal operation,” prosecutor Emily Johnson stated.

She alleged he “cruelly” manipulated his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura, threatening to release a video of her participating in a complex sexual “freak-off” if she rejected him.

Johnson painted Combs as a violent felon, mentioning incidents like burning a man’s car and making outrageous demands of a woman he had hung from a balcony.

“Let me clarify… this case isn’t about the private sexual lives of celebrities,” she asserted.

“It’s a case of coercion and criminal behavior,” she added as Combs listened attentively.

A jury consisting of 12 members (eight men and four women) was confirmed on Monday to determine Combs’ fate.

The selected jurors remain anonymous, which means they should try to shield themselves from media exposure and social media discussions regarding the high-profile case.

“Toxic Relationships” claim
Combs’ defense attorney Tenny Jelagos argued that “this case revolves around love, jealousy, infidelity, and money.”

Combs rose dramatically, surveying the jury box as Jelagos introduced him.

Jelagos described Combs’ accuser as “a competent, strong adult woman,” referring to his relationship with Ventura as “a toxic relationship between two people who care for one another.”

“It’s not sex trafficking if you choose to participate in your own sexual relations,” she said. Although the defense acknowledges incidents of domestic violence, Combs has not been charged with that.

Ventura is expected to give her testimony in the following days.

Combs, a notable figure in music history, appears to have matured over time.

He was accompanied by his mother, Janis, and his 17-year-old twin daughters, dressed in a white dress shirt under a beige sweatshirt, khaki pants, and black-rimmed glasses.

Security was tight, with many eager onlookers trying to catch a glimpse of the media frenzy surrounding the fallen music mogul.

If convicted, the former rap producer, often credited with elevating hip-hop to mainstream prominence, could face life in prison.

The essence of the lawsuit against Combs centers on his relationship with Ventura, who will be a key witness in court.

Intrusive surveillance footage from 2016 shows a physical altercation involving Ventura at a hotel.

It’s uncertain how much of the video will be accepted as evidence—the quality of the footage has been a contentious issue between the legal teams—but Judge Arun Subramanian acknowledged that at least some portions would be admissible.

The trial is anticipated to last between eight and ten weeks.
