A new poll suggests that President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s anti-nicotine stances backfired in the 2024 election, and swung a small but mighty demographic into Donald Trump’s camp.
Back in April, the Biden administration scrapped its potential plan to ban menthol cigarettes amid concern that the law would have significant political implications, mainly among working-class black voters. Earlier in the year, Schumer ignited an online rebellion after he called for a federal crackdown on the popular smokeless nicotine pouch, Zyn. (RELATED: Chuck Off! Well, it seems that even just anti-nicotine messaging may have turned off Americans who otherwise would have voted for the Democratic Party.
According to a new poll by Cygnal shared with the Daily Mail, the majority of nicotine users who responded voted for Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. Fifty-six percent of the 2,200 nicotine users surveyed said they voted for Trump in November instead of the VP.
As for voters who used dip or nicotine pouches — Zyn being one of them — a whopping 62% pulled the lever for the Republican candidate, compared to 33% who backed Harris, the poll found. Meanwhile, the majority of cigarette smokers said they voted for Trump, with 57% going for the Republican. Tellingly, 54% of menthol smokers said they voted for Trump after the Biden administration hinted at a potential ban, the Daily Mail reported.
If there was ever a niche demographic that was going to come through for Trump, it was going to be the nicotine users. I think they see the absurdity of the modern Democratic Party, which condones sex changes for children but wants to regulate the commonplace vices humans have enjoyed for well over a century. Considering the Biden administration pumped the brakes on the menthol ban, the Washington, D.C. swamp creatures probably got the memo: don’t mess with the working stiff’s vices. But too little, too late.
