Tragic Death of Italian Orienteering Athlete Mattia Debertris
Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertris tragically passed away at the age of 29 after collapsing during a competition in China last Friday, according to event organizers.
The International World Games Association (IWGA) released a joint statement on Tuesday alongside the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), addressing the loss of Debertris.
“The World Game family and the IOF are deeply saddened by this tragedy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to all athletes and friends within the orienteering community affected by this event,” the statement expressed.
Debertris was competing in the 12th edition of the Chengdu World Championships when he was found unconscious during a men’s distance race. Although he received specialized medical attention, he was pronounced dead on Tuesday.
IOF President Tom Hollowell described Debertris’s death as a “tragic loss of life.” He shared his sorrow, saying, “Words cannot fully convey the profound sadness surrounding this loss. Our thoughts go out to everyone mourning Mattia.”
No official cause of death has been disclosed.
Debertris had been an integral part of the Italian Orienteering Federation, having competed in multiple world championships and World Cups, including a notable fifth-place finish in the 2022 World Cup Relay Final.
Orienteering, which combines outdoor navigation and athleticism, has roots in disciplines like cross-country skiing and football, both of which Debertris enjoyed during his childhood. He pursued orienteering passionately, reflecting his commitment to the sport.
Moreover, beyond athletics, he was also an accomplished civil engineer with a PhD from a university in Stockholm, showcasing his diverse talents and dedication.
