“Dirty Jobs” host Mike Rowe told Daily Caller co-founder Tucker Carlson in an interview published Wednesday that Americans “get the message” about pursuing a college education. “It may be starting,” he said.
Lowe explained to Carlson that research showing young people rank college education low on measures of importance is “a good thing,” and the founder of the Tucker Carlson Network (TCN) also said: They were urged to agree that a diploma does not mean that the recipient is educated.
“Do you have any evidence? I know people are listening to you, but again, I haven’t seen anyone argue with what you’re saying.” said Mr. Tucker. “But do you feel that things are changing or moving?”
Lowe said the cultural expectation of attending college after high school is a “consensus” that most Americans “agree with.” He likened the idea of ”supporting something you don’t personally support” to the behavior of people on Twitter, calling it a “collective illusion.” (Related article: ‘I don’t understand why they hate us so much’: Gold Star father arrested at SOTU says he ‘never’ contacted Tucker Biden)
“It’s everywhere if you look for it. It’s mind-boggling,” Lowe told Carlson. “And this was kind of a wake-up call for me, because I’ve been talking about this deeply ingrained belief for 15 years.”
“Parents and guidance counselors really believe that this is the best path for their children, and this is the most expensive path,” Rowe continued. “But here’s the latest research. When you actually sit people down and dig deep and deep…Gen Z now ranks the importance of a college education 47th out of 50.”
Carlson responded, “That seems expensive.”
“Well, there used to be three, right? But over the last five or six years, like many people, I’ve wondered if something has changed. In that generation. I haven’t seen it yet and I hope so,” Lowe said. “People are starting to get the message that just because you have $200,000 in debt and a fancy diploma doesn’t mean the world is going to pave a path to your door. That doesn’t mean they’ll be hired in that field.”
“It doesn’t mean they’re well-educated,” Carlson said.
“It doesn’t make any sense at all. Other than the fact that you owe $200,000, right? That’s what it means,” Lowe added.
Lowe called a college diploma a “receipt” for the “information gained in exchange” for receiving it. The “Dirty Jobs” host said it’s a “good thing” that the college diploma he calls the “golden ticket” is “starting to wane.”
