J.B. Pritzker Calls for a Stop to ICE Activities in Chicago During Halloween: 'Allow Children to Enjoy Their Childhood'

Gov. Pritzker Requests Suspension of Immigration Operations Over Halloween Weekend

Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois has urged federal officials to pause immigration enforcement activities in Chicago during the Halloween weekend. His appeal comes as residents who have faced years of crime related to illegal immigrants express mixed feelings about federal presence in the area.

In a letter sent on Tuesday, Pritzker asked key figures from Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to halt their operations from Friday through Sunday in places where Halloween celebrations are planned. This request, made public by NBC Chicago, underscored his concerns regarding community safety during the holiday.

“No child should be forced to inhale tear gas or other chemicals while trick-or-treating in their own neighborhood,” he stated during an interview with Fox 32, referencing a recent incident where federal agents reportedly deployed tear gas in Irving Park just before a Halloween parade.

News reports indicated that the use of tear gas occurred after federal agents detained illegal immigrants, leading to protests from local residents who confronted ICE. This escalated tensions and resulted in a chaotic scene in which tear gas was used shortly before the parade began. Footage from the event showed people approaching agents and expressing their outrage vocally.

In further comments, Pritzker emphasized the need for children to enjoy Halloween without fear. “Illinois’ children should not be robbed of their innocence. We want them to be able to enjoy America’s time-honored traditions in safety and peace,” he said, urging for a reprieve from intimidation during the holiday.

However, some, like former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, have criticized Pritzker’s stance. In a video, he claimed that certain areas of Chicago are now safer due to federal efforts to remove criminals, noting that crime rates in neighborhoods like Little Village have significantly fallen this year.

Interestingly, a number of Chicago residents seem to support the actions of U.S. Border Patrol agents assisting ICE, even as protests against their presence increase. Left-wing activists have reportedly intensified their efforts to disrupt law enforcement activities targeting illegal aliens, sometimes resorting to rocks and even fireworks as means of attack against federal officers.

According to reports, ICE has been active, arresting over 800 illegal aliens as part of a recent operation in the state. This enforcement has stirred up a complex array of community reactions, revealing a divide in opinions about safety, enforcement, and the rights of undocumented individuals.
