Ed Sheeran Faces Criticism Over Macklemore’s Removal from Tour

Ed Sheeran has come under fire after pulling rapper Macklemore from his tour following the latter’s pro-Palestine comments made during a recent performance. Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff expressed disappointment in Sheeran, suggesting that he lost a significant chance to “stand up” against corporate interests.

In an interview with The Guardian, Antonoff, who has produced hits for artists like Taylor Swift, criticized Sheeran for allowing outside pressure to dictate his decisions. This backlash arose after Macklemore called for “Free Palestine” during his opening act on Sheeran’s Loop Tour.

Antonoff voiced his frustration, saying, “If you think it is [controversial], you’re lost in some other sauce that is so crazy. They’re going to let some promoter tell me what I can say? Don’t book me. I’ll play for free outside.”

Reportedly, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and other NFL team owners threatened to prevent Sheeran’s stadium shows if Macklemore remained on the lineup. In light of this, Antonoff suggested that instead of yielding to such demands, Sheeran should have canceled the tour entirely and performed free concerts outside the venues to raise funds and awareness.

“[Ed Sheeran] missed a massive, beautiful opportunity there. Just cancel the whole tour, then play for free outside each venue, raise a bunch of money, rather than let a billionaire tell you what to do,” Antonoff said. He stressed that the issue is widespread, as many people feel the influence of wealthy individuals on their lives.

Sheeran later responded to the controversy at a concert in Philadelphia, describing the violence in Israel and Gaza as “horrific” and “catastrophic.” Several artists originally slated to perform with Sheeran, including Finneas and Lukas Graham, withdrew from the tour in support of Macklemore, who is now promoting his own “Free Palestine Tour.”

Antonoff, who identifies as Jewish and supports the Palestinian cause, praised Macklemore for his courageous stance, stating that expressing such views is a deeply human action. “It’s not in any way a strange, uncomfortable, or controversial thing to say,” he added.

Meanwhile, film critic Christian Toto questioned Antonoff’s motives, arguing that his comments may be more about gaining approval within the music industry than defending free speech. He pointed out the potential negative impact on workers if Sheeran were to cancel his tour, suggesting that Antonoff’s views lack awareness of the broader implications.

Fox News Digital has attempted to reach out to both Sheeran and Macklemore for their insights on the matter but has yet to receive a reply.
