Jack Hughes expresses pride in being American following Olympic gold victory

On Sunday afternoon, Jack Hughes emerged as a celebrated figure in American sports, beaming with pride as he represented the Stars and Stripes.

At just 24 years old, Hughes clinched the winning goal that secured Team USA’s 2-1 victory over Canada in a thrilling overtime matchup, marking the U.S.’s first Olympic gold in men’s hockey since 1980.

After the game, Hughes, sporting blood and broken teeth, reflected on the momentous win, expressing his joy in restoring glory to the nation.

“This is all about our country right now,” Hughes shared with NBC. “I love America. I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The American hockey fraternity is so strong. I’ve had so much support from former players and I’m so proud to be an American now.”

The match kicked off with a stunning goal from Matt Boldy for the U.S., but Canada, the renowned favorite and historically successful team, managed to equalize with a goal from Cale Makar late in the second period.

With the score tied, Hughes delivered the “golden goal” just 1 minute and 41 seconds into the overtime session, playing 3-on-3.

Hughes praised his fellow Americans, especially Connor Hellebuyck, who had a stellar game, stopping 41 out of 42 shots to fend off Canada’s relentless offense. “It was an unbelievable game from Hellebuyck,” he noted. “He was our best player by a mile tonight. An unreal game by our team.”

“It’s just a brave, gutsy victory,” he added. “That’s American hockey. It’s a fantastic Canadian team, but we’re America. We’re very proud to be Americans. Tonight was all about our country.”

During the jubilation, Team USA honored the late Johnny Gaudreau by donning No. 13 jerseys while parading around the ice and bringing their children on for a team photo.
