Jacksonville official put on administrative leave following ICE alert

DeSantis Defends ICE After Jacksonville Employee’s Controversial Post

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis spoke out on Thursday in support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the suspension of a Jacksonville officer for warning residents about the agency’s activities in the city.

Yanira “Yaya” Cardona, who serves as the Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for Jacksonville, was placed on administrative leave after mentioning in an Instagram Live stream that ICE had established “speed traps” and was monitoring specific roads.

When asked for a comment, DeSantis pointed to a press conference he held the same day, reaffirming his commitment to uphold the law. He stated, “I know that a woman in Jacksonville city government was releasing information. Look, that’s not how we operate in Florida. We’re going to respect law enforcement and the rule of law.”

He further indicated that Jennifer Cruz, the individual accused of assaulting an ICE officer, would face consequences for her actions. “This is not Minneapolis. It’s not going to end well in Florida,” he cautioned.

In her stream, Cardona explained that ICE was targeting businesses related to lawn care and air conditioning for documentation checks. “Unfortunately, now is not the time to fight,” she advised, suggesting that residents comply with any official inquiries. “If you don’t have to go out, please stay home,” she added, emphasizing the importance of preparation and reliance on support networks.

In her Instagram post, Cardona also provided further advice for managing immigration enforcement scenarios, suggesting individuals consult a lawyer and designate trusted people for legal matters. “If you are pulled over, be careful and follow directions,” she cautioned.

City officials responded, stating that the information shared by Cardona was common knowledge based on prior reports and community discussions. Mayor Donna Deegan highlighted the fears among the immigrant population in Jacksonville, emphasizing the need for sensitivity given the current climate. “We’re a city of immigrants…they’re worried. They’re scared,” she noted.

Deegan clarified that Cardona’s suspension had no relation to the content of her remarks. Instead, she pointed out that protocol had not been followed regarding social media communications. “We have policies in place that require any public statements to go through official channels,” she explained.

Fox News Digital has sought comments from Cardona regarding this matter.
