Jade Melbourne sustains tooth injury in bloody incident after being struck in the face

The WNBA Tooth Fairy Visits Melbourne

On Thursday night, an unexpected incident involving Chelsea Gray brought a bit of chaos to the game, earning the nickname “Tooth Fairy” for the WNBA. It all unfolded as the mystic guard navigated around Melbourne’s defense.

In the first quarter, Gray’s aggressive play led to a collision that left Melbourne injured. As Gray tried to maneuver toward the rim, her elbow unintentionally collided with Melbourne’s face, resulting in a bloody scene.

Photos from the aftermath showed Melbourne clutching his mouth, clearly in discomfort. The force of the hit caused not only swelling but also cracked teeth.

After the incident, a Twitter post captured the moment, warning viewers about the graphic nature of the injury. The commentary noted Melbourne’s unfortunate luck as he walked off the court.

Melbourne, just 22 years old, quickly received attention from the medical staff and was escorted to the locker room, but he made a return to the bench later on.

Gray reflected on the key fouls that transpired during the game amidst the frenzy.

Despite Melbourne’s short stint on the court—lasting merely a minute—the Mystics secured a 94-83 win over the Aces, largely thanks to a standout performance from rookie guard Sonia Citron, who scored 21 points.

This win marks the third in a row for Washington, placing them sixth in the WNBA standings with an even record of 8-8.

On average, Melbourne contributes with 6.5 points, shooting 40% from the field over approximately 23.5 minutes per game in his third league season. The young player was drafted 33rd overall in 2022 but spent his initial season in Australia with the Canberra Capitals, before officially joining the team in 2021. In the current season, he’s managing averages of 16.3 points, 7.6 assists, and 5.1 rebounds.

The game, though marred by injury, showcased resilience and skill, highlighting the unpredictable nature of sports.
