New Jersey Voter Registration Controversy

CNN anchor Jake Tapper recently criticized Democrats for dismissing suspicions regarding illegal immigrant voting, especially after surprising news from New Jersey surfaced on Tuesday.

Democratic Governor of New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, disclosed that thousands of non-citizens had been mistakenly registered on the state’s voter rolls. She indicated that “around 6,600 people” who weren’t eligible to vote were registered due to a “significant software error” by the state’s DMV, a blunder that occurred between June 2023 and June 2024 under the previous administration.

Sherrill also mentioned that ultimately “fewer than 400” non-citizens actually voted in the elections.

During a live news segment, Tapper acknowledged that these developments were certainly not favorable for the Democratic stance on illegal voting. He remarked, “This is detrimental to the Democratic Party’s argument that illegal immigrants do not vote.”

Conservative voices on social media seized upon the New Jersey situation, using it to bolster their argument concerning the risks of non-citizens affecting election outcomes. Supporters of Trump highlighted the necessity of passing the SAVE America Act, which is aimed at improving election security.

Just days prior to Sherrill’s announcement, President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the White House, reiterating his call for Congress to enact the SAVE America Act and underscoring election vulnerabilities as well as concerns about foreign interference in U.S. elections.
