Correction from CNN’s Jake Tapper on Pipe Bomb Suspect’s Identity
CNN anchor Jake Tapper made a correction on Friday after mistakenly labeling the Washington, D.C. pipe bomb suspect as a “white man.”
On Thursday, he had described Brian Cole Jr., the individual suspected of placing pipe bombs near RNC and DNC headquarters just before January 6, as a “30-year-old white male.”
During the correction, Tapper informed viewers, “I should note that yesterday, minutes before I showed you a photo of the suspect, I incorrectly said the suspect was white. As you can clearly see in the photo, he is clearly black. We apologize for the mistake.”
CNN has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
The Department of Justice confirmed that Cole has been charged with transporting explosives across state lines and attempting to cause destruction using fire or explosives. Authorities have indicated that more charges may follow.
This development seems to culminate a lengthy search for the perpetrator.
Officials noted that the arrest stemmed from evidence the FBI had previously gathered.
Although the pipe bombs outside the RNC and DNC did not detonate, they were deemed functional and dangerous.
Cole appeared in court on Friday but did not enter a plea.
According to reports, the suspect spoke with law enforcement for several hours and expressed skepticism about the 2020 election results.
