Brunson and Towns Join WWE Event at Madison Square Garden
Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns were greeted with enthusiasm at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, but it wasn’t for their usual basketball performances.
Both Knicks stars made an appearance at WWE’s Saturday Night main event.
With sunglasses on and a brace on his left wrist, Brunson stepped out of the tunnel beside Roman Reigns, receiving a thunderous applause from the audience around 10 p.m.
As the pair looked upward, fireworks lit up the arena, a nod to the wrestlers’ signature “The One” gesture.
Once introduced, the three-time All-Star was met with chants of “MVP” and “Jalen Brunson.”
Brunson was then awarded a special blue and orange WWE Championship belt, while the crowd chanted, “You deserve it.”
However, the moment took a turn when Brunson encountered Knicks rival Tyrese Haliburton, right as Seth Rollins launched a surprise attack on Reigns.
With Brunson’s assistance, Reigns managed to toss Rollins out of the ring, leading Haliburton to exit the stage.
Following that, the Knicks’ Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy was showcased in the ring, as Brunson donned the WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt, which Reigns held high.
Still on the mend from wrist surgery, Brunson primarily stayed at the sidelines while the wrestlers faced off.
Towns had a bit more energy when he appeared earlier in the evening, helping Danhausen—known for “breaking the curse” of the Knicks—defeat J.D. McDonough, who made a surprise late-game appearance after the Knicks’ 2-1 loss to the Hawks.
Making a grand entrance, Towns emerged from a smoke-filled “Clone Machine Box.”
During the match, he executed a chokeslam on McDonough and then drove Dominik Mysterio through a wooden table.
Danhausen ultimately secured the victory with the “Triple D” on McDonough.
Prior to the event, Towns connected with Danhausen; they met at Fanatics Fest, introduced by CEO Michael Rubin, with Towns quickly paying homage to the wrestlers who supposedly brought good luck to the Knicks during the finals.
Rubin playfully asked Towns if he recognized Danhausen, to which Towns replied, “Of course, the guy who tipped us.”
As the Knicks rallied, winning 15 of their next 16 games after Danhausen’s initial remarks in the series, they clinched their first NBA Finals championship in 53 years.
Despite his accolades, Danhausen humorously requested something from Towns: “Give me your watch,” he joked. “Yes, I need a watch. I also need shoes.”
