Democratic strategist James Carville warned party members to be “careful” about endorsing Vice President Harris, saying the “road ahead is tough.”
“The mood has really changed within the party and across the country, but we have to be a little careful. There’s about 10 percent excess of triumphalism and it’s going to be a very difficult race,” Carville said in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday.
“It’s going to be a very close race and I understand people are feeling good and excited, but that excitement has to be tempered with reality, and the reality is that she has a tough campaign and, as you say, she has several things she has to accomplish at the same time,” he warned.
Harris, the leading Democratic candidate, received widespread support from party members after President Biden announced he was dropping out of the race.

“They have to get their campaign together quickly. They’ve obviously been thinking about this ahead of time, but they have to accomplish between now and the convention what most campaigns take eight months to do,” Carville continued.
He warned that former President Trump has many supporters.
“We also have an entrenched opponent who is going to walk away with the support of a large part of the country. They don’t care what’s true and what’s fair. We have to be prepared for that at all times. To Democrats, I say have fun, feel good, but there are tough times ahead. Let’s come together and get this thing done,” Carville said.
MSNBC’s John Heilemann asked Harris about her weaknesses, including her handling of the border crisis and questions about Biden’s health and ability to do the job.
Carville said Harris will have to “defend” and “debate” questions about a possible cover-up of Biden’s health issues.

He suggested Harris point out that Republicans “walked away” from border legislation in Congress, and said Harris was “never” the border chief.
“The second point she can legitimately make is that border crossings are down. Can we win this? No, we can’t, but we can do better. And I think if she gives an effective and compelling answer, this issue will lose some momentum,” he said.
Brzezinski argued that Harris should also blame Republicans for the border crisis.
“They made a deal. The Biden/Harris team gave Republicans the best deal they could get, and they delivered,” she said. “They ruined it for Donald Trump, so now she can shove it down their throats. That’s on them. They could have gotten everything they wanted and more, but they gave it up because of Donald Trump’s terrible politics.”
