James Comer Plans to Charge Hillary and Bill Clinton with Contempt of Congress

Contempt of Congress Charges Considered for Hillary Clinton

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) announced on Wednesday plans to initiate contempt of Congress charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This follows her absence from a deposition linked to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

Comer expressed frustration, stating, “I think the most disappointing thing for the Oversight Committee is the fact that we’ve been negotiating in good faith with the Clintons’ lawyers for five months. Throughout the last five months, they’ve been hinting that they’re trying to get us a date.”

The committee is also looking into her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who similarly missed his deposition scheduled for Tuesday. A resolution to hold Clinton in contempt is under consideration.

The Oversight Committee had subpoenas issued to the Clintons last summer in a bipartisan vote, alongside other high-profile figures like the former attorney general and FBI director. Most of those issued subpoenas did not provide information relevant to the ongoing investigation.

In a letter sent to Comer on Tuesday, the Clintons contested the validity of the subpoena. They claimed that Comer has not ensured the Justice Department followed legal protocols in releasing materials regarding the Epstein case.

The Clintons’ legal team noted, “They did so willingly and voluntarily despite the fact that the subpoenas were invalid and unenforceable, unjustified because they were not tied to a valid legislative purpose, and did not seek relevant information, representing an unprecedented violation of the separation of powers.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) voiced his support for the resolution to hold the Clintons in contempt. He remarked, “Obviously, I think he ignored the subpoenas of Congress. I don’t know what other remedies there are. … It’s contempt. This shows contempt for Congress, and he’s not talking about it at all, and I think the people owe it to them to answer.”
