James Comey’s media advisor was aware that his role with the FBI was unusual.

A representative for former FBI Director James Comey acknowledged the unusual aspects of his role with the bureau during a conversation with Congressional staff. This was revealed in a transcript shared on Thursday. Daniel C. Richman, who identified himself as one of Comey’s personal lawyers, described his position as a “confidant and media fixer.” He noted in a June 2017 call that it’s not typical for corporations to represent a former FBI director.

Jason Foster, the founder of Empower Surveillance, described the discussion he had with Richman as “extraordinary” and “strange,” particularly while he was working as an advisor to Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley. This exchange occurred shortly after Comey’s testimony, in which he denied leaking classified information to the press.

Richman confirmed that, following Comey’s dismissal by Trump, Comey employed him to communicate with the media regarding notes he had documented during his interactions with the then-president. However, Richman did not clarify whether he retained copies of these notes when probed by the committee.

In the same call, Richman made references to differing operational methods between himself and Comey, suggesting a degree of autonomy. He also stated his role as one of Comey’s lawyers. A quirk in the conversation was Richman’s admission that he was intentionally vague about certain details, indicating some awareness of the delicate nature of the situation.

Interestingly, he stated that he would invoke the privileges of attorney-client if summoned by the committee, reflecting a keen understanding of the legal complexities involved. Later, he expressed that he believed committee inquiries about him had already been addressed by staff members connected with special advisor Robert Mueller, adding a layer of uncertainty regarding the situation.

A collection of documents recently unearthed by FBI Director Kash Patel regarding classified information leaks was reportedly shared, shedding light on issues surrounding media engagements and the narratives being shaped, particularly pertaining to the Russia investigation. Those documents included a summary of a FBI probe into leaks that aligned with stories circulated in the media.

Files obtained through the investigation indicated a back-and-forth between Comey and Richman about the classified intelligence mentioned in earlier news reports, leading to Richman’s connections with journalists covering the story. However, Richman appeared hesitant to confirm whether he had disclosed classified information.

Comey had engaged Richman as a “special government employee” with the highest security clearance back in 2015. Remarkably, after his departure from the FBI, Richman maintained contacts with various media outlets.

Media Interplay

In light of the overlap between media interactions and investigative processes, it has emerged that Richman worked to shape perceptions around Comey’s decisions, specifically regarding his inquiry into Hillary Clinton’s email server. The New York Times reported on Comey’s scrutiny of both major candidates in the 2016 election, highlighting the weight of his choices leading up to Election Day.

However, newly declassified documents have cast doubt on the portrayal of Comey as an impartial figure. Recent findings indicate that the origins of allegations against Trump were politically motivated, coming from the Clinton campaign amid their own legal predicaments.

There exists an evident tension surrounding how information was relayed to the media, with Richman’s status at the FBI mentioned in some reports but not addressed fully by others.

Moreover, the FBI’s responses to inquiries from The Times about the classified information have also surfaced, raising questions about how the agency managed its communications during critical phases of these investigations.

Finally, the recommendations from investigations into Russian interference have yielded various insights into FBI operations and their handling of politically sensitive allegations surrounding both the Trump and Clinton campaigns.
