Texas Senate Nominee Calls for Broader Democratic Coalition

James Talarico, a Texas Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, recently urged fellow Democrats to draw inspiration from the successes of Zohran Mamdani in New York City. He emphasized the importance of forming a diverse coalition that encompasses democratic socialists and appeals to those on the far left.

In an interview on August 5, 2025, on the Higher Learning podcast, Talarico referred to Mamdani as a “template” for Democrats nationwide. He believes the party should replicate Mamdani’s successful strategies to secure election victories.

This interview came on the heels of Mamdani’s win in the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City about six weeks prior. Mamdani’s campaign agenda featured initiatives like free public transportation, a rent freeze, city-operated grocery stores, a $30 minimum wage, and increased taxes on the wealthy. During a Meet the Press appearance, Mamdani stated, “I don’t think that we should have billionaires.”

Prior to his podcast appearance, Talarico had already discussed the inclusion of democratic socialists in his coalition. When asked on NewsNation’s The Hill on July 29 about his stance on this, he affirmed that the Democratic Party needed a “giant tent” and acknowledged that this would encompass some democratic socialists. He also highlighted the importance of reaching out to individuals on the far left, framing the aim as “winning power.”

Talarico has been advocating for a healthcare plan he terms “Medicare for Y’all,” which would also provide coverage for undocumented immigrants. The name resembles Senator Bernie Sanders’s Medicare for All initiative.

One of Talarico’s early campaign ads mirrored Mamdani’s approach, and Fortune noted that “Texas has its own Zohran Mamdani.”

Breitbart News reported on September 1 that during a 2020 climate forum held by the Sierra Club, Talarico identified capitalism as one of three interlinked “oppressive systems.” He expressed gratitude towards young activists for connecting climate change with white supremacy and capitalism, remarking, “I think only by dismantling the ways these three oppressive systems interact can we start to address them.”

In a 2021 interview on the Activist Theology podcast, Talarico described Jesus as “the most popular figure in our country, particularly on the conservative right, is this socialist anarchist from Palestine.”
