James Van Der Beek's message about discovering God reemerges after his passing: 'I am deserving of God's love'

James Van Der Beek’s Journey of Faith and Love

Actor James Van Der Beek came to understand God’s love before his passing.

Following the death of the 48-year-old “Dawson’s Creek” star, tributes have flooded in for his family. However, a video showcasing Van Der Beek’s faith journey might leave a more profound impact than his performances on screen.

“If I am worthy of God’s love, shouldn’t I be worthy of my own?” he reflected poignantly.

Van Der Beek died on February 11. His family posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, stating, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”

Reflecting on Life

Since his passing, fans have revisited a message he shared on his birthday on March 8, 2024, where he expressed that he was on a path toward recovery after confronting his own mortality and experiencing “near death.”

“All the definitions that I held dear were stripped away from me,” he shared, reflecting on how being away from home for cancer treatment altered his roles as husband and father.

“I couldn’t be a provider because I wasn’t working, I couldn’t even be a steward of the land,” he continued, admitting the toll it took on him to feel like “a skinny, weak guy with cancer, alone in his apartment.”

Embracing Self-Worth

After meditating, he realized, “I am worthy of God’s love just by existing. And if I am worthy of God’s love, shouldn’t I be worthy of my own love? The same goes for you,” he asserted.

He acknowledged that this revelation was fueled by “all the prayers and love that have been directed towards me.”

“Run with it, no matter how it resonates with you. … Because of you, I am worthy of love. Thank you for your love and prayers. Have a blessed day,” he said warmly.

Van Der Beek is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. Following his death, several celebrities expressed their condolences, emphasizing what a kind-hearted person he was.

A Final Gift

WWE star Stacey Keibler shared, “Spending these last days with you was a true gift from God. I have never felt more present in my life.”

NFL legend Brett Favre also spoke fondly of his friendship with the Van Der Beek family, recalling shared moments filled with faith and laughter.

Actor Alfonso Ribeiro expressed his sorrow as well, saying, “I’m so heartbroken right now. I will forever be indebted to them for what they have given me and my family. He will forever live in my heart.”

Challenges of Illness

Throughout his battle with cancer, Van Der Beek highlighted the financial strain of his situation. He even auctioned off a jersey from his favorite football movie, “Varsity Blues,” to raise funds for his treatment.

A GoFundMe campaign established by his family has garnered nearly $2.3 million as of now, with donations pouring in, including $25,000 from director Steven Spielberg.

In a recent statement, Van Der Beek criticized the Democratic Party for not holding primaries to select candidates, questioning the nature of democracy when vital decisions are made out of public view.

“There’s no democracy without debate,” he concluded, underscoring the importance of open dialogue.
