Japan’s New Leader Sanae Takaichi Quickly Engages in Conflict with China

Japan and China Conflict Over Taiwan Remarks

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ignited tensions with Chinese officials on Friday, asserting that China’s military actions concerning Taiwan could pose a risk to Japan’s existence.

Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister last October, expressed that a potential Chinese assault on Taiwan might create circumstances that threaten Japan’s survival. As reported by the Guardian, he remarked, “The so-called Taiwan emergency has reached a seriousness that requires us to anticipate the worst-case scenario,” during a parliamentary meeting.

The situation intensified following a controversial statement from Chinese Consul General Xue Jian, who made a provocative post on Saturday that has since been removed. His message included a warning: “We have no choice but to cut off that filthy head that lunges at us without hesitation. Are you ready?” It went on to reference Takaichi’s comments.

U.S. Ambassador to Japan, George Glass, shared a screenshot of the deleted post, commenting, “My mask slipped again,” referencing a previous controversial comparison Xue made between Israel and Nazi Germany while also suggesting his statements represented a threat to both Takaichi and the Japanese populace.

Glass criticized the Chinese government for not living up to its self-proclaimed status as a “good neighbor.”

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minoru Kihara, described Xue’s remarks as “highly inappropriate” on Monday. He added, “While we can’t completely grasp the intentions behind Mr. Xue’s post, it’s clear that the comments were extremely inappropriate.”

Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally protested and demanded the removal of Xue’s post. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian defended Xue’s comments as personal, aimed at countering “false and dangerous statements advocating military intervention in the Taiwan Strait.”

He suggested that certain Japanese politicians and media are exacerbating the situation. According to reports, China has issued a “solemn complaint and protest” against Takaichi’s claims as well.
