Jasmine Crockett seeks Senate to establish 'ethical standards' for the Supreme Court

Crockett Launches Senate Campaign with Call for Supreme Court Oversight

After announcing her campaign for the Senate on Monday, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) expressed the need for “ethics guidelines” for the Supreme Court. She indicated that if necessary, Congress might have to engage in discussions with the justices to ensure accountability.

During an appearance on a talk show, Crockett emphasized the Senate’s unique role in overseeing the highest court in the country. “The only body that has oversight over the Supreme Court is the U.S. Senate,” she stated. She posed the question of whether the justices should adhere to some ethical standards, given that they currently operate without them. “Or do we just bring them in for a discussion?” she wondered.

She reiterated that the Senate holds exclusive powers to confirm judges and deliberate on potential court expansion, a strategy that Democrats have suggested in recent years.

Democratic strategists have noted that Texas desires a centrist candidate, yet Crockett seems to present a different approach altogether.

Crockett expressed that Congress has the authority to determine accountability for those in the administration, insisting on the need for a Senate vote to enact such measures.

On the topic of redistricting, she stressed that Democrats need to reassess their strategy for the Senate map. While Crockett asserted, “We’re going to flip the House of Commons,” she also questioned the value of such a flip if it merely highlights the administration’s misdeeds without a solid strategy for follow-up. “What’s the point if all we do is unveil the bad?” she asked.

She added a pointed observation regarding the current political landscape, noting that, “It’s clear they’re criminals; they’ve harmed people and disregarded those who voted for them. But how do we hold them accountable?” She emphasized that even if the House passes legislation, without support from the Senate, those bills ultimately fall flat.

The White House had not responded to inquiries regarding these statements.

Crockett started her Senate bid after speculation about her candidacy swirled for months. In her announcement in Dallas, she portrayed her run as a resistance against President Donald Trump. This announcement coincided with former Congressman Colin Allred’s withdrawal from the race, which he attributed to a desire for party unity rather than a disorganized primary.

In her remarks, Crockett took aim at Trump, targeting his incumbent opponent, Republican Senator John Cornyn.

“I watched the American Dream being threatened as Trump tried to dismantle it. Now, I’m ready to fight,” she declared.
