When Vice President JD Vance met with British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer in his oval office on Thursday, tensions erupted among politicians to talk about the UK's deteriorating freedom of speech.

According to a British media outlet, Vance reportedly angered Europeans. Earlier this month at the Munich Security Conference – he said, “the threat from within, the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, the values shared with the United States.”
“I said what I said. I have special relationships with some of my British friends and some of my European allies,” Vance said in response to a reporter's question on Thursday.
“But we also know that there was a violation of free speech, not only that it really affects what the British, but also what they do in their own country,” he added. That's what we'll be talking about at lunch today. ”
Sitting a few feet from Vance, the priority spoke in favor of his country's regulations.
“We have had freedom of speech in the UK for a very long time, and that will last for a very long time,” said a Labour politician.
“It's true, we don't want to reach out to our citizens, and ours. We don't. That's absolutely right,” he told Vance. “But in relation to the UK's free speech, I'm really proud of it. Our history is there.”
In Munich, Vance cited a case of a European criminal conviction for conduct protected by the US First Amendment. One such example is a 51-year-old physiotherapist in the British Army and a veteran of Adam Smith Connor, who was ordered to pay £9,000 ($11,346) to pray outside the abortion clinic, claiming he “violated the buffer zone.”
“I wish this was a fluke. It's a crazy, one-off example of a terrible, written law that's been enacted for one person,” Vance voiced at the time. “In the UK and across Europe, freedom of speech is something I fear.”
Vance previously explained that he had spoken to the British Prime Minister, who took office in July 2024.
During discussions in the Oval Office, priorities got caught up in a lengthy debate with Trump after GOP President nurtured the way European countries plan to “get their money back.”
“We don't get everything,” PM replied. “I mean, there was a fair bit of talent. There were some loans, but mostly, it was actually talented.”
