Vice President J.D. Vance Visits Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcher

On Thursday, Vice President J.D. Vance expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, which is significant to Christians as the site of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. He described the visit as an “amazing blessing.”

This trip is part of Vance’s efforts to support the ceasefire agreement reached during the Trump administration between Israel and Hamas regarding the ongoing situation in the Gaza Strip.

“I am so thankful to the Greek, Armenian, and Catholic priests who honor this sacred place,” Vance shared on social media, alongside a photo from his time at the church. He added, “May the Prince of Peace have mercy on us and bless our efforts for peace.”

He also expressed appreciation for the Franciscan friars, who conducted a private Mass for him and his family, acknowledging their commitment to peace and service during a special moment.

Remarks Ahead of Church Visit

Leading up to the visit, Vance spoke to reporters, highlighting his desire to experience the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. “Christians believe this is the place of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion,” he noted. He encouraged people of all faiths, especially fellow Christians, to pray for peace in the region.

Reflecting on the ongoing developments, Vance remarked, “I think we’ve made incredible progress over the past week. There’s still more to accomplish, but with your prayers and the right team, I believe we can achieve our goals.”

Insights from the Historic Site

The Church of the Holy Sepulcher was originally established in 326 AD, although the initial structure was destroyed in 1009 AD. According to Francesca Stassolla, a professor at Sapienza University in Rome, the current church largely reflects the work of the Crusaders who came centuries later.

The site’s significance is emphasized by its long-standing role as a major pilgrimage destination for Christians worldwide. Vance noted that while the ceasefire currently appears stable, the overarching goal remains to create lasting peace and security in the area.

As he concluded his visit, Vance characterized the trip as “productive” and reiterated his intention to foster stability and humanitarian aid in Gaza, while ensuring that Hamas no longer poses a threat to Israel. “We can provide stability and hope for the Gazans, but we also need to ensure that Israel is safe,” he concluded.

During a joint appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Vance mentioned the tough task at hand: disarming Hamas while rebuilding Gaza, all to improve the situation for its people and protect Israel from future threats.
