According to Amazon’s website, the company’s Door Desk was born in the summer of 1995, when Bezos and several employees needed desks.

Nico Lovejoy, a friend of Bezos and Amazon’s fifth employee, said, “We happened to be across the street from a hardware store, and he saw a desk for sale and a door for sale, and he thought the door was better.” It was much cheaper, so I made the decision.” Buy a door and put legs on it. ”

He noted that at the time, Amazon’s entire e-commerce platform ran through a pair of servers named Bert and Ernie, located in a “pretty rickety” door desk built by Bezos.

“I went to replace the hardware on the desk that Mr. Bezos built,” Lovejoy said in an Amazon post. “You don’t want to hire Jeff Bezos as a carpenter. He’s much better at other things. I think he would tell you the same thing.”

Amazon’s website also features a guide to building an Amazon door desk written by Lovejoy.

Supplies needed for this project include a solid core door to serve as the desktop, four 4x4s to be used as the legs, braces to connect the legs to the desktop, and screws.
