Jeffries Critiques Trump on Handling Gaza Conflict

House minority leader Hicombe Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has publicly criticized President Trump’s approach to the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. He is advocating for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance for those affected, and the release of hostages held by Palestinian militant groups.

According to Jeffries, “In the first six months of Donald Trump’s presidency, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a breaking point. Despite the promises made by the president and the challenges that have come with the administration he inherited, Hamas still holds hostages.” He emphasized the dire conditions, saying, “The hunger and suffering of Palestinian children and civilians amidst this ongoing conflict is simply unacceptable.”

Jeffries continued, urging the Trump administration to act swiftly to alleviate the crisis. “This humanitarian issue can be resolved if they choose to act immediately.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, mentioned on Thursday that the U.S. is shifting its focus away from peace negotiations in the region. Instead, the administration is exploring alternative measures to secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

A White House spokesperson was asked for comments regarding the situation.

Numerous aid organizations have raised alarms about the dire state of the Gaza Strip, noting that one in five people is suffering from malnutrition. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, more than 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives while waiting in food lines.

Israel contends that Hamas, identified as a terrorist organization by the U.S., is exacerbating the crisis to attract attention.

Allies of the U.S., including Australia, the UK, and France, have echoed similar concerns about the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, urging for increased assistance.

Democratic leaders in the House have reiterated their call for a two-state solution as a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

They added, “Ultimately, this peace can only be achieved through a two-state solution that allows for a secure Israel and a Palestinian state, ensuring dignity and self-determination for all.”

In a gesture of support for the Palestinians, Israel has permitted Jordan and the United Arab Emirates to send aid packages to Gaza.

Since the 2023 terrorist attacks, around 1,200 Israelis have been killed, with approximately 250 taken as hostages. Almost two years later, local health officials report that over 57,000 Palestinians have died, a figure that does not differentiate between civilians and Hamas fighters.
