Jeremiah Smith's contentious touchdown for Ohio State against Michigan sparks social media backlash

Jeremiah Smith rang in his 20th birthday with a memorable performance on Saturday, finding the end zone in Ohio State’s 27-9 victory over Michigan. However, the play sparked some debate.

Smith’s 35-yard touchdown, followed by a successful PAT, put Ohio State ahead 10-3, though the ball seemed to wobble as it approached the goal line.

It wasn’t entirely clear if Smith lost the ball before reaching the pylon, but it was evident he didn’t regain possession until he was out of bounds.

In cases where the offense fumbles in the end zone and the ball goes out, it typically results in a touchback.

The officials reviewed the situation but ultimately upheld the touchdown, which ignited some backlash on social media.

While the touchdown could be viewed as significant, especially since Michigan struggled to score throughout the game, it served as a crucial moment.

After Smith’s touchdown, Michigan managed another field goal, but Ohio State quickly responded, extending their lead by eight points at halftime with a touchdown from Brandon Innis.

Then, as snow began to fall, it seemed to favor Ohio State further.

The second half kicked off with both teams exchanging punts, but Michigan faltered, gaining just 11 yards, allowing Ohio State excellent field position.

Colonel Tate, returning to play for the first time since November 1, found the end zone on a 50-yard run just two plays into the drive, pushing Ohio State’s lead to 24-9.

Ohio State hadn’t defeated Michigan since 2019, and last year’s loss—where they were a three-touchdown favorite—was considered the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry.

The Michigan players even planted a flag at midfield in Columbus, stirring tension. It was a vivid reminder that the Buckeyes held onto for nearly an entire year.

With both teams sitting at 12-0 and ranked among the top two nationally, Ohio State and Indiana are set to face off in the Big Ten Championship next week.
