Jeremy Taylor takes legal action against Oakland school after sexual misconduct allegations are dismissed

Teacher Sues California School After Allegations of Relationship with Student

A California educator is taking legal action against his previous school, claiming damages after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a former student. Jeremy Taylor, aged 50, is seeking a minimum of $4 million from the Oakland School of the Arts, which notable figures like Zendaya attended.

The allegations surfaced when a girl, then 14 years old, accused Taylor of grooming her at her home, engaging in sexual acts, and sharing inappropriate personal details that were not discussed in class. Although Taylor quickly denied specific claims—like owning a red truck—these denials didn’t prevent his firing in 2022.

Just a few months later, he was arrested, leading to charges from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for molestation. Interestingly, the case against him remained unclear. After three years filled with extensive legal battles and numerous court hearings, the charges were ultimately dismissed in March of the following year.

In a twist, the girl herself withdrew her civil suit against Taylor despite having reached a $1.1 million settlement with the school prior. Now facing challenges in finding employment, Taylor is worried he might never teach again and is pursuing damages, arguing that the school rushed its investigation while overlooking significant issues in the accuser’s allegations and her mental health history.

In a statement about his situation, he mentioned, “I’m in a position where I have to prove negative. It’s not enough just to be found not guilty or have the case dismissed.”

He asserts that the school, particularly its administration, should have been more proactive in handling accusations of sexual misconduct rather than hastily deeming him guilty. The young woman had confided to friends in 2021 about her relations with Taylor, which reportedly occurred around ten times when he was teaching her ninth-grade math.

Her friends alerted the police without her knowledge, prompting an investigation by the school, which was relatively new at that time. When officers reached out to her, she mentioned that she had shared personal issues—like her mother’s struggles with substance abuse—and said that Taylor had assisted her in contacting Child Protective Services.

During her upbringing in foster care, she expressed feeling closer to her teachers, who sometimes took her out during lunch breaks.

She further detailed that their sexual encounters began in the reading corner of a classroom and escalated to his apartment later. Text messages between them were cited by investigators as part of the evidence. In one instance, she excitedly informed him about her new flip phone, sharing snippets about her day-to-day life and her treatment for an eating disorder.

However, Taylor’s side indicates that the girl’s adoptive mother was unclear when asked if the phone number on her bill belonged to him. An external inquiry by the school found her claims credible. Ultimately, after a warrant was issued for his arrest, Taylor surrendered to authorities, facing a felony charge related to lewd conduct with a minor.

After a three-year tumultuous fight to clear his name, prosecutors dropped the case in March 2025, citing a reassessment of the situation based on previous prosecutor conversations. Taylor’s legal complaint indicated that had the school conducted a thorough investigation, they might have uncovered that he was wrongfully accused.
