Jerry Jones: ‘I do not think this will be’ Dak Prescott’s final season with Cowboys ‘at all’

Dak Prescott is entering his eighth season as quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, but it may be his last.

That could complicate things, as Prescott’s four-year, $160 million contract expires at the end of the season.

But Jerry Jones seems determined.

Jones denied the notion that the 2024 season would be Prescott’s final with Dallas.

“I don’t think so,” Jones said. “I honestly don’t think this will be his last year with the Cowboys. Am I a psycho compared to myself in the mirror? No.”

“If it hasn’t been clear already, I want to say that we appreciate how much good Dak Prescott has meant to this team. Guys certainly play better with him around. He makes his teammates play at a higher level, there’s no question about that. So, I’m one of his biggest fans.”

On the one hand, “America’s Team” went 12-5 in each season under Prescott’s contract. On the other hand, the team only managed one playoff win in that span, including a first-round upset last season.

Prescott is coming off arguably his best season as he threw for an NFL-leading 36 touchdowns and 4,516 yards to finish second in the NFL MVP race.

Receiver CeeDee Lamb had the best early season of his career, finishing third in Offensive Player of the Year voting with an NFL-high 135 catches for a career-high 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns.

But Jones seemed to suggest that the salary cap and eventual paydays for Micah Parsons and Lamb could impact Prescott’s free agency prospects.

“Believe it or not, there were a lot of things in my life that I wanted that I couldn’t buy because I didn’t have the money,” Jones said.

It’s unclear what Prescott wants in a new contract, but he’s likely looking for something favorable given the deals other quarterbacks have received beyond the 2023 offseason.
