Jets face Browns in early 2026 matchup after trade deadline

2026 Jets Preseason Update

The Jets are gearing up for the 2026 preseason with a notable shift in strategy. This week, they announced trades involving standout defenders, Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, signaling a focus on the future.

As the team prepares for their upcoming matchup against the Browns on Sunday, the remainder of the season will revolve around assessing player performances to determine next year’s roster.

Currently sitting at 1-7, the Jets find themselves in a difficult position, but they do have five first-round picks over the next two years. This gives them a strong chance to acquire a franchise quarterback, which might be a silver lining in a troubling season.

Even though general manager Darren Mousey and head coach Aaron Glenn emphasize the importance of winning this season, it’s hard to see how that translates into a win against the Browns this Sunday.

Defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes expressed his resolve, saying, “They’re not canceling the damn season, so we’ve got to put the pressure on and be ready to move forward and play a football game.”

Both the Jets and the Browns are coming off a bye week. Just before their break, the Jets achieved a notable victory, narrowly defeating the Bengals 39-38. Perhaps they can carry that momentum into this next game, as it was one of the stronger performances by their offense in recent weeks.

The Browns, on the other hand, are struggling at 2-6 and are also undergoing changes. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has handed play-calling responsibilities to offensive coordinator Tommy Reese for the time being. Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel is set to start, while fellow rookie Shedur Sanders is healthy and available, having rested last game.

With recent turmoil due to the trades, it’s going to be fascinating to see how the Jets respond. Gardner and Williams were well-liked figures, and Williams was a cornerstone of the defense, so the locker room appears to be taking the shock of the trades quite hard.

Additionally, they’ve made another significant change by benching linebacker Quincy Williams, the younger brother of Quinnen. It’s a lot for the team to digest.

Glenn remains optimistic, stating, “This is a game we’re committed to. The players are upbeat and ready for the most part, as they always are every week. We’re looking forward to playing this team,” clearly keen on securing another win.
